Tax Rules Are Rigged In Favor of Corporations

Corporations pay less in taxes than most Californians

California is a huge and important market where corporations are earning vast wealth, but nearly half of corporations doing business in California pay no more than the paltry $800 minimum in taxes.

How is it possible that wealthy corporations can pay less in taxes than a college professor or a social worker?

BECAUSE THE RULES ARE RIGGED.

GLOBAL CORPORATE TAX HAVENS

Global profits can be shuffled on paper - the โ€œWaterโ€™s Edgeโ€ tax loophole. California loses $3 billion a year because of this loophole.

Sunset on NOL Abuse

Net Operating Losses and other business tax credits can be similarly hoarded and used to erase tax debts. These cost California $3-5 billion a year.

REWARDING WALL STREET LANDLORDS

Corporations are REWARDED by our tax system for scooping up family homes and escalating our housing crisis.

R&D Credit Abuse

Research & Development credits can be hoarded and then used to wipe out a tax bill, even for very profitable corporations. This costs California $1.5 billion a year.

NO OVERSIGHT ON CORPORATE GIVEAWAYS

California lacks basic oversight and transparency for billions of dollars we are giving away every year to profitable corporations.

$ 1000000000
They say California is the fourth largest economy in the world, but it sure doesnโ€™t feel that way to me and other people I know. Every day is a struggle. Weโ€™re always behind. No matter how hard we work, workers arenโ€™t getting very much of the wealth we help create.

STOP CORPORATE FREELOADING

CORPORATIONS ARE OFFLOADING BILLIONS IN COSTS ON TAXPAYERS

By far the biggest corporate bill for Californiaโ€™s workers and individual taxpayers comes from corporations paying wages so low and providing such poor benefits, that workers turn to our safety net to survive.

HEALTH

The cost of providing MediCal to 3.7 million working Californians is $28 billion a year.

HUNGER

83.7% of CalFresh enrollees are working during or near the time of their enrollment.

FAMILY

California pays billions to subsidize childcare costs for families who are too poor to afford care while they go to work.

JOIN US IN UNRIGGING CALIFORNIA FOR WORKING PEOPLE

The Unrig California campaign urges legislators to join our fight for shared prosperity and a fair economy and against the Trump transfer of wealth to corporations:

Support Medi-Cal & Safety Net Corporate Contributions

Hold corporations accountable for their use of our safety net services like MediCal and CalFresh.

Support AB 1790 (Connolly)

Ensure that corporations pay the taxes they owe by limiting the use of legal tax dodges, like the corporate tax haven loophole.

Support other measures aimed at holding corporations accountable

For what they owe, including:

  • End the subsidies for corporate home-buying - Support AB 1611 (Haney)
  • Build stronger accountability for corporate tax giveaways - Support SB 1349 (Gonzalez)
